Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA)

Responsibilities:

  • Provides patient care services under the direction of the Occupational Therapist (OT) and performs duties deemed appropriate for the COTA position.
  • Assists the OT in evaluation and development of rehabilitative plan of care and re-evaluation.
  • Prepares clinical and daily progress notes, reviewed by the OT, and submits per agency policy.
  • Document and chart all services rendered.
  • Submit ALL clinical notes and progress notes within 24 hours of each care visit.
  • Instruct patients and families in exercise programs under OT’s direction and instruct patients on use of assistive devices.
  • Guides patients in therapeutic self-care and creative activities to improve independence.
  • Identifies and reports possible ineffective drug therapy or adverse reactions to the OT.
  • Observe and record patient activities and report findings to the OT and physician.
  • Consult with OT regarding home visit outcomes and report findings in writing.
  • Assists in evaluation and development of rehabilitative plan of care under OT’s supervision.
  • Instructs other health team personnel and family members in certain phases of occupational therapy.
  • Attends rehabilitation department meetings and case conferences.
  • Instruct patients in the use of assistive devices.
  • Participates in discharge activities and assists in completing the Occupational Therapy Discharge Summary.
  • Participates in meetings, conferences, and in-service programs.
  • Participates in discharge activities and completes discharge summaries.
  • Adhere to federal, state, and accreditation requirements.
  • Regularly check the schedule to see assigned patients.
  • Must maintain patient privacy and confidentiality (HIPPA).

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an approved school with a two-year course for Occupational Therapy Assistants.
  • Licensed in Maryland.
  • Minimum of six months institutional/home health experience.
  • Knowledge of home health, OT techniques, and documentation.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with managers and staff.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Effective communication in English is required.

Job Conditions

  • Must have a driver’s license and be able to drive to client residences.
  • Ability to access homes, which may not be wheelchair accessible.
  • Physical requirements may involve lifting and carrying patients and equipment.
  • Adequate hearing, eyesight, and physical dexterity needed to perform duties and communicate effectively.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required.

Equipment Operation: Utilizes occupational therapy and medical equipment, along with hand-washing materials.
